A proposed Voluntary Exit Scheme for staff in the six regional Further Education (FE) Colleges was launched today. The Voluntary Exit Scheme is seeking funding from the Government Restructuring and Reform Initiative (RRI) budget which requires the FE Sector to submit a business case for approval - the outcome of this process and the level of allocation will not be known until June 2015. While the Scheme is still waiting funding approval – to assess demand - Expressions of Interest can be submitted up to Friday 17th April at 12 noon. The scheme is open to permanent employees across the Colleges.

The Northern Regional College (NRC) has been shortlisted for a national award recognising their commitment to improving the employment prospects of their students. The Santander Career Academy of the Year Award celebrates excellence and aims to support schools and colleges to further develop the Career Academies programme for their students. The winning school or college will be awarded £5,000, while runners up will receive £1,500 for second place and £500 for third place. The college is one of only three finalists chosen from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the award, in recognition of their careers programme for Level 3 Engineering Students. The judging team will visit the college this week and meet with a range of stakeholders including staff, students and employers.

Two NRC Computing students joined 200 other teenagers from across Northern Ireland at St Georges Market Belfast to join the Generation Innovation, Night of Ambition. This action packed evening, hosted by Radio 1 DJ Phil Taggart, allowed young people to meet and ask leading entrepreneurs a range of questions as to what inspired and motivated them and to take part in an idea generation session. The two students, Rebecca Mills and Jordan Wilson were nominated as ‘Most likely to succeed in the Knowledge Economy’ by the Northern Regional College. They are currently studying on the Level 2 Information Creative Technology course at the Magherafelt Campus and were nominated due to their entrepreneurial flair, work ethic, overall grade performance and general level of engagement throughout the course.

Cinemagic’s ‘Reel Politics’ launched last week as 24 young women came together for an innovative film project to encourage more of them to get involved in the political arena. Faith McKinnell a Level 2 Performing Arts student at the Newtownabbey Campus was one of the lucky participants on this project. She along with the 23 others ladies had five days to create three original short films, shooting in Belfast City Hall, Parliament Buildings and the Northern Ireland Science Park, focusing on the benefits of young women in politics. The films were screened at Belfast City Hall and the NI Assembly to mark International Women’s Day.

Level 2 and 3 Health and Social Care students in the Coleraine campus have participated in a Hands off my friend workshop facilitated by Corrymeela - Northern Ireland’s oldest peace and reconciliation organisation. The students learned what hate crime is, why it happens and what they can do to tackle it.

NRC Computing Students ‘XTheTXT’

Since 2010 Allstate Northern Ireland’s XtheTXT road safety campaign, in partnership with the Police Service of Northern Ireland and DOE, has led the way in promoting the dangers of texting whilst driving, delivering workshops to more than 18,000 students across the province to date. Allstate visited Northern Regional College recently to raise awareness and encourage safety behind the wheel by asking students to take part in their APP IT OUT competition and come up with creative ideas for an XtheTXT mobile app.
