Counselling

Beginning any new course at the Northern Regional College can be a stressful and anxious time for many, whether as a mature student returning to education after a long time or for students who have just completed their secondary education.

All of us at some time in our lives have to deal with difficult experiences at, they might be physical, emotional, psychological or social. Talking things through with a counsellor can really help.

Student counselling gives you the space to open up and see things more clearly.

What is counselling all about?

If something is causing you unhappiness or trouble then it may be worth some time thinking about why this may be happening and talk things through. This is what counselling is - it gives you the chance to talk freely about what is causing you distress or anxiety, and helps you to resolve your own problems.
Counselling is carried out in a supportive, caring and non-judgemental way. Your counsellor will gently challenge you to face your problems and set realistic goals to work towards. The counsellor is not there to make the decisions for you. Their aim is to talk through the problems you are experiencing and ultimately bring you to a place where you are in a better position to make choices.  If it's appropriate, counsellors can offer guidance by informing you what other students have done in the past to overcome similar issues to yours.

What we offer?

  • Flexible and prompt face-to-face support with most students offered an appointment within 3 days of calling us.
  • Up to 6 sessions of face-to-face counselling.
  • Access to a counsellor on your campus or another convenient location.
  • Access to expertise on a wide range of issues that might be affecting your wellbeing.
