NRC Computing Students ‘XTheTXT’

Thursday

Since 2010 Allstate Northern Ireland’s XtheTXT road safety campaign, in partnership with the Police Service of Northern Ireland and DOE, has led the way in promoting the dangers of texting whilst driving, delivering workshops to more than 18,000 students across the province to date. Allstate visited Northern Regional College recently to raise awareness and encourage safety behind the wheel by asking students to take part in their APP IT OUT competition and come up with creative ideas for an XtheTXT mobile app.

Level 2 Information Creative Technology students at the Magherafelt Campus took part in this competition to allow them to showcase their creative skills. This involved the group producing a design for a mobile application, discussing how it would be implemented and presenting their ideas in the form of a video.

The NRC students suitably impressed the judges with the creative way that they produced their video. The XtheTXT team from Allstate Northern Ireland visited the college to present a certificate to each student that entered the competition and facilitated an XTheTXT session on campus.

Hayley Ferguson, XTheTXT leader said, “Allstate NI has always been proactive in highlighting the dangers of using a mobile phone whilst driving to young people across Northern Ireland. This competition provided another fun way to encourage students to take road safety seriously as well as giving them the opportunity to get involved in IT. We were blown away by the level of creativity and innovation of the NRC entry and appreciate all the time and effort that the group put into their video to get this road safety message across.”

Kevin Meehan, NRC Lecturer in Computing said "The students found this competition an enjoyable experience and it was a chance for them to demonstrate the creative skills that they have been learning in class. Texting while driving is a growing problem and having this event on campus will hopefully help reduce the number of road traffic collisions as a result.”
