A talented local welder has been selected for a chance to take part in the final of a national welding skills competition – SkillWeld 2014 – to find Britain’s top trainee welder. 20-year-old Stuart Hamilton, who is an apprentice welder at Newmills Engineering in Ballycarry, and trains at the Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus has been identified as a potential finalist for SkillWeld 2014.

Gareth Harkness, an apprentice Engineer from Ballymena, has been crowned Apprentice of the Year 2014. Gareth, 19, is completing his apprenticeship in Engineering at Northern Regional College, Ballymena. He is employed by Ryobi Aluminium Castings in Carrickfergus, who produce car engine castings that are distributed worldwide. The awards ceremony, organised by the Department for Employment and Learning, was held in Hillsborough Castle and was hosted by presenter Claire McCollum.

Jordan Hunter, a student from Northern Regional College’s Ballymena campus has won a top student of the year award for his performance on the Engineering Career Academy programme. The Sir Winfried Bischoff Award comes from Career Academies UK, a national education charity that helps young people prepare for the world of work through mentoring, workplace visits, inspirational talks and internships. The two year programme boosts the employability skills of 16-19 year olds across the UK.

Congratulations to the NRC/ETT apprentice Ryan Connor who was the gold medal winner in Electrical Installation at the recent Skillbuild competition. Employed by Knox Electrical Ltd, Ryan is a Level 3 Electrical Installation apprentice at the Farm Lodge campus in Ballymena.
