The competition will take place at The Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC in November 2014. He was selected during one of seven semi-final events taking place across the UK, where he competed alongside 9 other trainee welders from Northern Ireland.
After completing his training and gaining a welding qualification, Stuart Hamilton hopes to convert his apprenticeship into a full-time welding career.
Speaking of his selection to compete in SkillWeld 2014, Stuart Hamilton said: “I did not expect to be selected and it is great to have a chance to go through to the final. Only ten welders across the UK will be at SkillWeld 2014, so depending on the quality of the work pieces I put through, I am hopeful that I will get through to the final stage of the competition.”
Stuart Hamilton will be officially notified if he has been selected to take part in the final of SkillWeld 2014 in September 2014.
Colin Kennedy, Marketing Associate UK & Ireland at Air Products, lead sponsor of the competition, said: “There is a great deal of skill involved in producing a high-quality weld joint, time after time, and the trainees at this semi-final event all demonstrated a very high level of ability. For those that make it to the SkillWeld 2014 final, the sky’s the limit. World Skills UK team judges will be talent-spotting at the event and contestants could be selected to compete internationally at WorldSkills 2017 in Abu Dhabi UAE.”
