Zoe Flynn and Mantas Rudys have just completed a three day work placement in the Biomedical Department at the University of Ulster where they observed and participated in some Masters students research. This gave them an insight into the ‘real life aspect’ of working in the Science industry. Joseph Suarez-McHenry is currently completing a three day placement with Armstrong Medical.
Course tutor Dr Johanne Brolly highlighted the benefits of work placement as part of the course, saying, “Students benefit greatly from working in a professional environment. It allows them to bring this experience into the classroom as well as giving them a range of important transferrable skills and valuable experience in the Science industry which will not only facilitate the completion of their course, but also help secure future employment.”
Developed in the areas of Laboratory and Industrial Science, this qualification provides education and training for scientists in a wide range of sectors including quality control, medical laboratory analysis, forensic science, food science, health science and soil analysis.
The course content, experience and qualifications of the lecturers and the opportunity to embark on their own research project is a perfect stepping stone for students hoping to progress to higher education or gain employment in a related area. Modules include: Fundamentals of Science; Human Physiology; Microbiological Techniques, Biochemical Techniques. In addition, an important part of the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma is the Work-based Learning element – module Using Science in the Workplace.
Dr Johanne Brolly further commented, “With 90% of businesses recruiting STEM skilled graduates, now is the time to enrol on a STEM-centred course. Our BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science (focusing on laboratory and industrial science) will provide you with an equal opportunity to gain entry to hundreds of STEM degrees both locally and on the mainland as your A-Level counterparts. We are also offering a new Foundation Degree in Applied and Medical Science in our Newtownabbey campus that students can progress to.”
