Participants on the Game Development Academy have been showcasing their skills and talents to games industry experts at an event at Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus. The Academy, launched by the Department for Employment and Learning in September 2015, is a collaborative initiative between Northern Regional College, Southern Regional College and South West College. It has given 16 talented creative individuals the skills and experience over the last 12 weeks required to take up exciting new opportunities in the growing game development industry.

BTEC Level 3 students in Northern Regional College’s Magherafelt campus had a visit from Enda McKenna (IT3Sixty) as part of the BringITOn Career Talks. The main aim in delivering these talks is to create awareness of career possibilities within the IT Industry. During the session they covered Job roles currently in demand, Progression routes into the sector and what it is actually like to work in IT in Northern Ireland.

Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry today launched the next round of open days to be held in the six local further education Colleges. Northern Regional College’s open days will be held at its campuses in Coleraine on Monday 29th February (6pm - 8pm), Magherafelt on Tuesday 1 March (6pm - 8pm) Ballymena and Newtownabbey on Wednesday 2 March (6pm - 8pm) and Ballymoney Thursday 3rd March (6pm - 8pm). The Open Days provide a unique opportunity for prospective students and their parents/guardians to explore the range of courses and learning opportunities on offer at each regional campus.

The Northern Regional College in partnership with Skillbuild NI held a successful Inter Campus Competition this week which saw top trainees from across its campuses compete in the areas of Carpentry, Joinery, Plumbing, Brickwork, and Electrical Installation. Skillbuild, run by CITB NI, is held annually each spring with the top local construction apprentices competing to win coveted titles in a various range of trades.

Northern Regional College Art and Design students recently received an inspiring and informative talk on Public Sculpture by Ross Wilson, one of Ireland’s best known and respected Artists. As part of the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma Art and Design course, which is equivalent to 3 A Levels, we recognise the importance of building specialist features into the programme such as guest speakers, visits to exhibitions and opportunity to participate in live projects/competitions. These integral elements give student’s practical on hand experience and knowledge about their chosen subject area.
