Northern Regional College has responded to the growing demand for qualified hairstylists and barbers by extending its range of Level 2 and Level 3 courses. The new academic year also sees the opening of Shine, a new training facility for hairdressers and barbers, at the College’s Ballymoney campus. The Shine training salon is fitted with the latest industry standard equipment to ensure that students get the necessary skills and knowledge to make it in the competitive world of hairdressing.

Northern Regional College student Marcin Hanski is hoping to benefit from the growing demand at home and abroad for skilled programmers. After doing his GCSEs, he completed a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in IT at the College’s Newtownabbey campus to get the entry requirements to study computer science at university. “In the longer term though, I’d like to move to Japan as there’s a huge demand there for skilled programmers.”

After leaving St Colm’s High School in Draperstown, Ryan decided to do a two year BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Childcare at the College’s Magherafelt campus, which is the equivalent of 3 A levels.

She has thoroughly enjoyed her College experience and is now looking forward to a busy year ahead as she juggles coursework with her new role as student president.

Following the shock announcement in October 2014 that JTI Gallaher’s factory was to close, William decided to retrain and work towards a career in accountancy. He has now reached the first major milestone on that journey by coming third overall in the prestigious Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) 2017 summer exams.
