Northern Regional College Preparing Students for the Global Employment Market

Wednesday

Northern Regional College student Marcin Hanski is hoping to benefit from the growing demand at home and abroad for skilled programmers. After doing his GCSEs, he completed a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in IT at the College’s Newtownabbey campus to get the entry requirements to study computer science at university. “In the longer term though, I’d like to move to Japan as there’s a huge demand there for skilled programmers.”

He adds: “In the meantime, I’d like to be work with an IT company in Northern Ireland to get the experience and skills needed to become a freelance programmer so I can work and travel around the world.”

Marcin, who is a former pupil of Hazelwood Integrated College enjoyed the ‘hands on’ approach to learning at Northern Regional College, where tutors conduct classes as though students are working for a real company.  “The course taught us how to manage different projects and how to work to deadlines on projects which had to be planned, designed and implemented by us.”

He says he would recommend the BTEC Level 3 Diploma, which is equivalent to A levels, to anyone interested in IT.  "It covers a wide range of topics such as the installation and development of software, building computers and how they work as well as the basics of game development, databases, spreadsheets and much much more.”
