Construction apprentices from across Northern Regional College converged on Newtownabbey campus this week for the annual intercampus competition hosted by the College in partnership with SkillbuildNI. The competition is an opportunity for the young people to pit their skills against their peers in the skills areas of Plumbing, Electrical Installation, Brickwork, Joinery and Carpentry. The category winners now progress to the Northern Ireland regional finals in March and from here, regional winners are selected to represent Northern Ireland at Skills Show UK in the autumn with the potential of securing a coveted place at the WorldSkills finals in Russia.

The students are studying Travel and Tourism at the Coleraine campus and, as their lecturer Karen McLeod explained many of them are interested in pursuing careers as holiday representatives and particularly Children’ s Reps in a variety of holiday destinations overseas.

Hour of Code, which has now grown into a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in over 180 countries, started out as a one-hour introduction to computer science.
Continue ReadingNorthern Regional College has joined forces with other Further Education (FE) Colleges across Northern Ireland to launch ‘Let’s do Business’, a new marketing campaign designed to promote the sector’s business development services. Further Education colleges offer a range of funded training and mentoring programmes, bespoke training and business development initiatives. The ‘Let’s do Business’ campaign aims to make FE Colleges the ‘first port of call’ for local employers and businesses who want to re-skill or up-skill their workforce or who are interested in how they can diversify and innovate.
Continue ReadingThe PSNI’s hard-hitting road safety roadshow stopped off at Northern Regional College’s Coleraine campus to drive home the message that road safety is everyone’s responsibility. The roadshow, organised in conjunction with Cool FM, is visiting schools and colleges throughout Northern Ireland as part of the PSNI’s ongoing efforts to encourage young road users to take more care and responsibility on the roads. It was one of a series of events hosted by the College to mark National Road Safety Week. Road Safety talks were held at Trosan Ave and Farm Lodge in Ballymena and the ‘Too Fast Too Soon'.
