The hassle of juggling work, part-time study and family life was forgotten about this week as Dunmurry mum, Leanne O’Neill graduated with Distinction from Northern Regional College. Leanne, who is a Trainee Design Manager with McLaughlin & Harvey was awarded a Foundation Degree in Building Technology and Management at the College’s annual higher education graduation ceremony in Galgorm.

Education is a lifelong journey and it’s never too late to start learning, according to Ballymoney woman, Marlene Purdy. Marlene, who is visually impaired, graduated with distinction at Northern Regional College’s annual graduation ceremony at the Galgorm Resort. She was awarded a Level 5 Certificate in Health and Social Care and now in her mid ‘fifties, Marlene hopes to go to university. After leaving school, Marlene went to London and worked with Barclay’s Bank. When she returned to Northern Ireland, she realised she would need to retrain.

Thirty six years after leaving school with no qualifications, Coleraine’s Johnny Goldie has graduated from Northern Regional College with a Foundation Degree in Building Technology and Management. Now in his fifties, Johnny says he hopes his story will inspire others. He applied to do the course in 2014 but although he was running his own small building company and had plenty of industrial experience, he didn’t meet the course entry requirements because he didn’t have Maths and English.

Going back to school as a mature student was ‘challenging and demanding but well worth the effort’, according to Coleraine woman, Tanya Warwick, who has just graduated with Distinction from Northern Regional College. Tanya was awarded a Level 4 Certificate in Health and Social Care at the College’s annual graduation ceremony. She now plans to go to Ulster University to study Occupational Therapy.

Northern Regional College staff and students across all departments and all campuses enthusiastically embraced the charity challenge to raise funds and awareness for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland. Beauty students at Newtownabbey, the group who raised the most money for the charity, handed over a cheque for £2604.03 to Suzie McFarland, Community Fundraising Officer for Cancer Focus NI.

Over 250 local primary and post-primary pupils from the Magherafelt area have taken part in a global educational initiative which provides an introduction to computer science. Hour of Code, part of Computer Science Education Week, saw students studying IT at Northern Regional College’s Magherafelt campus organise a series of sessions for the pupils.
