Fiona McDowell, Equality Officer at the College who co-ordinated the fundraising activities across the College, explained how the money was raised through a series of ‘Wear it Pink’ events.
“Staff and students at each College campus organised fundraisers which included cake sales, coffee mornings and afternoon tea, nail painting, hair dye, leg wax, hair braiding, Indian head massage as well as raffles. They were also encouraged to add an extra splash of colour to their wardrobe during the fundraising events - I never realised there were so many different shades of pink!”
She continued: “A startling statistic is that one out of every two people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. Cancer Focus NI needs to raise around £4 million annually to fund its life-changing services. It relies on the generosity of the public to continue with its vital work so we were happy to be able to do our bit to help raise both awareness and funds for this very well deserving charity.”
Cancer Focus NI has been working since 1969 to reduce the impact of cancer on people’s live, providing care and support services for cancer patients and their families. It offers a range of cancer prevention programmes to raise awareness and help people lessen their risk of getting cancer. The charity also scientific research into the causes and treatment of the disease and campaigns for better health policy to protect our community and its future.
