Microsoft participates with Northern Regional College in European digital initiative

Northern Regional College is organising a digital initiative which involves a series of events and workshops across its six campuses as part of a European-wide digital programme. Microsoft’s Academic Program Manager was one of the lead speakers at one of the kick-off events. Taking place from 25 – 29 Mach 2019, Northern Regional College’s Digital Skills Week coincides with ALL DIGITAL Week, an annual digital empowerment campaign which promotes the importance of digital skills for inclusion and employment and engages 100,000 people across Europe in online and offline events with the aim of tackling digital transformation and its effects.

An award winning apprentice carpenter at the College’s Coleraine campus has travelled to South Africa to learn about the work of apprentices there. Samuel Gilmore (17) from Aghadowey, who took home a highly-coveted gold medal from the UK World Skills competition, travelled to South Africa as an ambassador for the College. After leaving school in 2016, Samuel completed Level 2 Skills for Work course at the Coleraine campus. The following year, he was employed by Mark Pollock Joinery in Kilrea and now spends four days with his employer and one day in the College workshop as he works towards achieving a Level 3 award in site carpentry.

In July, Limavady-native Eamon will jet off to the sunnier climes of Bakersfield, California to play college soccer whilst studying International Business with a full scholarship which covers the costs of his tuition, accommodation, food and sporting gear.
Continue ReadingA student at Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus has been awarded Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Master accreditation.The MOS programme offers students the option of gaining certification in one or more different Microsoft applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. To become a Specialist Master, they have to pass exams and demonstrate proficiency in four Microsoft Office programmes.

Secondary school students had the opportunity to experience the very latest in cutting-edge technology at Northern Regional College’s Bring It On event, hosted at the College’s Magherafelt campus. Over 40 students from Magherafelt High School and Sperrin Integrated College spent the day trying out high-tech professional software and innovative hardware that they cannot get their hands on in the classroom and learning about a range of digital careers – from cyber security to programming to animation.
