Students not only had the opportunity to test out some of the most-up-to-date industry equipment available right now, they also got to hear from some of Northern Ireland’s largest employers. A diverse range of organisations, from local tech heavyweight Kainos, the Cyber Unit of the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Health and Social Care Board, gave students an insight into what a career in technology could mean for them.
Judith Knox, IT and Computing lecturer at NRC said: “This event gives students the opportunity to see what is available to them in terms of a career in the digital sector. A career in computing can mean much more than sitting behind a keyboard all day: there are a diverse range of employers out there looking for bright, hard-working young people to fill a range of really exciting roles. We have plenty of intelligent, enthusiastic young people in Northern Ireland, however, we need to make sure they have the right skill-set to fulfil these roles. At Northern Regional College we are committed to equipping our students with the kind of skills that set them up for an exciting future career without limits.”
Judith continued, “It is vital that school-age students get all the information on what career paths are out there and how they can access them. Their dream career may not follow the traditional route, so we encourage all students to look at option such as apprenticeships or HNC qualifications to get them to where they want to be – and possibly, further than they imagined they could go.”
