Course Content

The Pearson BTEC level 3 Diploma is for learners who are employed or have a placement of 14 hours per week in the role of a pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician.  This is a competence-based qualification where you will learn how to provide safe and effective pharmacy services, supply medicines and devices to patients whether on prescription or over the counter, assemble medicines for prescriptions, manage areas of medicines supply such as dispensaries, pre-packing, assembling and labelling medicines

Special Features

Successful completion of the course will meet the requirements for registration as a pharmacy technician in England, Scotland or Wales. NI is under review as they do not currently have a register for Pharmacy Technicians.  Pharmacy technicians work in a wide range of settings, including registered pharmacies, community services, the Prison service, GP practices and hospitals.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is assignment based and occupational competence gained in the workplace where core skills will be assessed by a an occupationally competent and knowledgably assessor on the course team.

In order to register for this qualification learners must be currently working in a pharmacy environment, having secured a placement or employment as pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician. They must have GCSE passes (C or above) or equivalent qualifications in English, Maths and Science, an acceptable reference of good character and an acceptable self-declaration for health. 

In circumstances where there are more applications for the course than there are places available, the College reserves the right to select candidates from those achieving the highest grades.

Learners who achieve the qualification alongside a Chemistry A Level in the longer term can progress to more senior or complex job roles in pharmacy. With the addition of A level Chemistry learners can progress to higher education such as the MPharm Pharmacy Degree or alternative undergraduate degrees in the science field.
