Course Content

Building on the success of our Performing Arts courses, we have developed a music course that offers aspiring musicians the opportunity to develop as performers and composers, while also exploring the latest music production techniques. Working in our professional music studio, students get to grips with the latest digital and analogue equipment, and ultimately produce their own recordings. Collaborating with other departments, they participate in shows at professional venues, in front of live audiences, at least twice per year.

Over the two years, students have the opportunity to pursue individual interests, while also developing new skills using specialist equipment and software that provides them with the foundation to progress towards a music industry career. Ultimately, this course offers a wide variety of both practical and academic units, giving students a fundamental understanding of music, the music industry and practical awareness.

Included in the course:

  • Live performance
  • Studio recording
  • Composing for the screen
  • Songwriting
  • Production techniques
  • Backline technical management
  • Understanding the sound and music industry
  • Use of Logic Pro, Sibelius, and Pro Tools

Course Aims

Musicians and producers alike are welcome on a course that will aim to improve your skills and knowledge in both areas, to become an artist who can self-produce or a producer who can engineer as well as lift an instrument when they need to.

Special Features

The main aim on this course is to get our students into industry, which we do by immersing them into a proper working environment.  Technical skills are taught to a very high level by industry professionals and students regularly work with external, real-world clients (recording studios, live events).  We also partner with specialist universities, ideally placing students to enter the industry.

Course Update

Please note that due to ongoing major campus construction projects courses at Ballymena, Coleraine and Ballymoney may be relocated to alternative suitable locations as required.

Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs at Grades C or above plus demonstrable a interest in music, performance and/or production.

In circumstances where there are more applications for the course than there are places available, the College reserves the right to select candidates from those achieving the highest grades.

Essential Skills

All full-time students at the Northern Regional College have the opportunity to improve their English, Maths and IT skills and gain qualifications. The qualification you take will depend on the qualification you already have. If you do not have a grade C or above in GCSE English, Maths or ICT, you MUST do Essential Skills. This will form a compulsory part of your timetable.
