We Are The Champions!

Thursday

A stunning strike three minutes into stoppage time from Kevin O'Kane was a fitting way for Northern Regional College to edge out IT Carlow 'C' and become the first Northern Ireland side to claim a Rustlers Colleges and Universities League title. The Division Two final took place on Tuesday 13 March at the FAI headquarters in Blanchardstown, Dublin, with the victory for the team meaning they are now promoted to Division One next year.

The win was even more impressive as the College had a player sent off with 20 minutes still to go.

IT Carlow scored first after just eight minutes, with the Coleraine side drawing level after an hour, the result of playing a patient game and dictating in midfield. The equaliser came from the penalty spot.

Both teams had chances to score again but was left to O'Kane to provide the late drama and strike the winner which took the title north for the first time.

With the exception of Caolan Coyle who studies at Magherafelt campus, the team comprises Foundation Degree and Level 3 students based in Coleraine.  They are coached by Gregory McGovern and Connor McCullough.

Congratulations from everyone in the College go to the team, their coaches and all those who have helped and supported them along the way to claiming this famous victory.
