Northern Regional College accountancy student, 20 yr old Julie Alexander from Ballymena, has come joint first in the UK and Ireland wide 2016 Institute of Accounting Technicians (IAT) Diploma exams. This is the first time in the last three years that anyone from Northern Ireland come within the top 5 in these exams.

Congratulating Julie on her success the College Principal Professor Terri Scott said:
"Julie is an example of the new generation of high achieving A level students who have made the decision to bypass university and instead taking the professional training route through our part time higher education courses. This approach to "earning while learning" is proving increasingly attractive for 18 year old school leavers who want direct entry to a career path which will deliver professional qualifications without the debts associated with a parallel route through university. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our industry partners who make these courses possible and in particular Stevenson and Wilson, the chartered accountancy firm where Julie had a two year contract throughout her IAT course. "

Commenting on her achievement Julie said:
"Working in an accountancy practice while studying for my Institute of Accounting Technicians exams has given me a great breath of knowledge, it has set me up for life long career in accountancy. A university lifestyle comes with high costs. My choice to work while I studied means I have accumulated no debt and I am working in a profession that I love."

Julie who achieved A,A,B grades in her A levels found employment with the chartered accountancy firm Stevenson & Wilson, and has since taken up a position with the Henderson Group at Mallusk. She now plans to take her professional accountancy exams over the next few years and as a result of achieving her IAT Diploma she will receive generous exemptions.

Places are still available on the part-time Institute of Accounting Technicians course based at our Trostan Avenue Campus in Ballymena. Come along to our Open Evening on Monday 5 September to find out more or contact Roisin McAlinden for more information on roisin.mcalinden@nrc.ac.uk
