Stateside Opportunity for Engineering Student

Dean Boyle a current Northern Regional College Foundation Degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering student, is about to embark on a Stateside trip on the SUSA Programme. The Study USA programme, originally known as the Business Education Initiative, was established in 1994. It is a highly successful and innovative programme which offers undergraduate students studying in Northern Ireland the opportunity to study business and management for one academic year at universities and colleges in the USA. The programme is administered by the Department for Employment and Learning and delivered by the British Council.

Dean, who will be traveling to Seton Hill University, Greensburg, Pennsylvania is excited about this trip, Dean explains “I look forward to traveling to the USA and studying a new subject, Business. I believe business it a key area within manufacturing engineering I.e. Knowing your market, how u can improve products due to customer requirements etc.  I have looked at what Seton Hill University has to offer me and can't wait to get started. As well as the academic side I look forward to trying new sports, travelling, meeting new people and experiencing their cultures and traditions.

Dean has also been shortlisted by Enterprise Ireland for the Student Entrepreneur Awards 2015 for his business idea, only 50 other students within Ireland have been selected to go through to this shortlisting stage. 

After completing his course at NRC Dean plans to complete a degree at Ulster University and then take up a full time post with McAuley Engineering in Ballymoney. Dean’s fellow student Andrew Kelly will also be travelling to the USA as part of the programme. 

Bill Watson, Curriculum Manager at Northern Regional College explains ‘I am delighted that Dean and his classmate Andrew Kelly have been accepted to this successful programme in the USA.  The programme offers significant financial incentives and is well regarded amongst graduate employers. Overall, the purpose of Study USA is to produce graduates with an international, business-orientated perspective who will be capable of eventually making a contribution in advancing the Northern Ireland economy.’
