Stateside Opportunity for Engineering Student

Friday

Andrew Kelly a current Northern Regional College Foundation Degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering student, is about to embark on a Stateside trip on the SUSA Programme. The Study USA programme, originally known as the Business Education Initiative, was established in 1994. It is a highly successful and innovative programme which offers undergraduate students studying in Northern Ireland the opportunity to study business and management for one academic year at universities and colleges in the USA. The programme is administered by the Department for Employment and Learning and delivered by the British Council.

Andrew, who will be traveling to Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia explains, “I am very excited to have been selected to participate on this gap year.  My plan is to improve my understanding in business through studying at the Davis and Elkin College.  As I am doing a mechanical engineering course at the moment, a business qualification will help me to understand how to design and manufacture a product that will be attractive towards potential investors, customers and future employers, both local and abroad. I plan to travel around America and play a variety of sports such as swimming and football, do a bit of hiking and hopefully make lifelong friends while I'm over there’

After completing his course at NRC Andrew plans to either progress to University to study a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or go straight into the work place. Andrew’s fellow student Dean Boyle will also be travelling to the USA as part of the programme.

Bill Watson, Curriculum Manager at Northern Regional College explains ‘I am delighted that Andrew and his classmate Dean Boyle have been accepted to this successful programme in the USA.  The programme offers significant financial incentives and is well regarded amongst graduate employers. Overall, the purpose of Study USA is to produce graduates with an international, business-orientated perspective who will be capable of eventually making a contribution in advancing the Northern Ireland economy.’
