To kick start the competition the students firstly had the opportunity to attend an initial mobile application development workshop and were then assisted over a three week period by tutors, culminating with an opportunity to present their work to a panel of experts including an experienced mobile applications developer from TotalMobile.
Winner of the competition, Ganga Gurung was presented with an iPad Mini presented by Stewart Simpson from TotalMobile. Stewart said, “ At TotalMobile we understand the great skills gap in the IT Sector. We therefore feel it is our responsibility to engage with local students and educational bodies to ensure that future generations are highly skilled enough to fill the range of technical positions on offer”.
As well as providing constructive feedback to all students as to how they could improve and enhance their application, the challenge also had the added bonus of encouraging students to consider mobile application development as a career and allow them to start to build a portfolio of work.
Kevin Meehan, Lecturer in Computing said "This was a great opportunity for students to showcase the skills they have acquired in the 17 week course (i.e. programming, testing and project planning). The mobile application they have created is something that they can show prospective employers in an interview and enhancing their employability opportunities."
