NRC Students Tackle Desert Challenge for Charity

Thursday

An 80-strong relay team of NRC sports students from the Coleraine, Ballymoney, Ballymena and Moyle areas are tackling a 156 mile treadmill time challenge between March 12 and March 16.

They are attempting to break the record of 20 hours 56 minutes for running one of the world’s toughest marathons, the gruelling Sahara Desert Challenge or Marathon des Sables.

The students are supporting Noel Brick, NRC Sports and Exercise Science lecturer, who will be travelling to Morocco in April to join over 800 other competitors taking part in the 7 day race, which is renowned as the toughest footrace on earth. Together, Noel and the participating students will be raising funds for suicide prevention charity PIPS and Facing Africa, which fights the effects of the gangrenous disease Noma.

Thanking the students for taking the “Run for their Lives” challenge, Noel Brick praised their professional approach to the project: “They’ve tackled the fitness challenge and are taking on an event management challenge to ensure the “Run for their Lives” week in NRC is a success and raises much needed funds for the PIPS and Facing Africa.”
