NRC Students Go Into the Woods

Thursday

Northern Regional College Level 3 Production Arts and Performing Arts students at the Ballmoney Campus in association with Northern Lights Production Company present the award winning musical ‘Into the Woods’ at the Riverside Theatre in May (27-30th). Following on from the success of their version of ‘Les Miserables’ last year, students are now taking on the hit Broadway musical.

This musical debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway on November 5th 1987.   The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.  The main characters are taken from “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Rapunzel” and “Cinderella”, as well as several others.  The musical is tied together by an original story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them and their interaction with other story book characters during their journey.

Paul McMaster, NRC course co-ordinator explains, “Performing the musical ‘Into the woods’ will provide the students on the Level 3 Performing Arts course with a platform to showcase their newly developed skills in Drama, Dance and Music. This invaluable experience will not only give the performing arts and music students the opportunity to perform in a professional theatre, it will also allow the L3 Production Arts students to work hand in hand with industry professionals.”

Melody May Felici, a first year Level 3 Performing Arts student at the Ballymony campus and a former student of Cross & Passion College will take on the role of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ with fellow class mate Peader McKinney ex-pupil of St. Paul’s College, Kilrea taking on ‘The Wolf’.  Second Year Level 3 Performing Arts student Antoinette McAllister will take on the guise of the evil ‘Witch’ as one of the key characters in the production.
