Sharon McKeown’s winning submission was awarded the commission following a competition by the Council.
The theme of the competition was to celebrate the achievement, courage, commitment and sporting endeavour of the winners. Darlene Hagan-Bezgin, Curriculum Manager Art & Design, commented, “Sharon embraced the design with energy and captured the essences of what was required from the brief drawn up by Newtownabbey Borough Council. She combined strong materials such as stainless steel with natural wood for the base, which was obtained from wood salvaged from fallen trees at Mossley Mill. Sharon’s winning design is a contemporary and unique piece of work.”
Darlene added, “This is a major celebration for the students and staff in the Art & Design Department at NRC Newtownabbey Campus, and in particular for Sharon. She is an outstanding and talented student who is currently studying for a Foundation Studies in Art & Design qualification. We congratulate her and we would like to extend our thanks to the Council for this competition and for giving her the opportunity to plan, design and develop her work”.
