Students across the College from the Newtownabbey Campus to Ballymena, Ballymoney and the Magherafelt Campuses all participated in the Skillbuild event. The winners, who will qualify from the Inter Campus Competitions, will then represent the College and compete at the annual Skillbuild NI Regional finals in May.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony Ronnie Laverty, NRC Head of Faculty for Building, Engineering and Science stated that “We encourage the students to participate in all competitions, which will enhance their skills and knowledge. The Inter Campus Skillbuild competition contributes to the learners experience and improves the trainee’s confidence, while providing them the opportunity to test their skills against their college peers.”
This year, students competed in Brickwork, Site Carpentry, Electrical Installation, Industrial Heating, Bench Joinery, Lead Sheetwork, Plastering and Drywalls Systems and the Plumbing trades.
In announcing the winners, Ronnie added his congratulation to all the students across the College who participated in the competition and thanked the dedicated staff for their hard work.
Success was achieved by Joel Lamont from the Ballymoney Campus who was awarded 1st place in Brickwork, 2nd place Michael Surgenor and 3rd place Ryan Cree from the Newtownabbey Campus.
In the Site Carpentry category, 1st place was awarded to Robert Hamilton, and 2nd place to Matthew Esler from the Ballymena Campus with 3rd place to Jamie Boreland, Coleraine Campus.
Success was achieved in Electrical Installation by Ryan Connor who was awarded 1st place, with 2nd place going to Aaron Topping and 3rd place to Brian Og Corbett, all studying at the Ballymena Campus.
Further success was achieved by Nathaniel McAllister who was awarded 1st in Industrial Heating, Ballymena Campus.
In the Bench Joinery category, 1st was awarded to Philip Kernohan, Ballymena Campus, 2nd Alister Armstrong, Newtownabbey Campus and 3rd to Dean Martin from Magherafelt Campus.
Competition winners in the Plastering & Drywall Systems were achieved by Daniel McKeegan who was awarded 1st place, 2nd Ciaran McTaggart, 3rd Brent Watton all studying at Ballymena Campus.
In the final category, Plumbing Pipework 1st was awarded to Ryan Forsyth, Newtownabbey Campus, 2nd Joshua McFall, Ballymena Campus and 3rd Aaron Moore, Newtownabbey Campus.
