The students, who are studying for the Level 2 NPTC Diploma in Animal Care and the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management, were contacted by the RSPB when they needed volunteers to help them to protect the local seabirds and wildlife.
NRC Lecturer Shenade Duggan commented, “All the students were very keen to support the work of the RSPB, the local landscape and the habitats of some fantastic wildlife. We encourage the students as part of their studies to volunteer for different projects and in this case it was to assist with clearing up the shore line and collecting up any rubbish which might be a threat to the birds.”
Sarah Laverty was one of the students who volunteered for the project. She said, “It was a great opportunity to be part of something that would ultimately make a difference to the environment and save the wildlife in this local area. While it was hard work, we all enjoyed working with Colin Graham and Chris Sturgeon, the Warden of the Belfast Reserve from the RSPB."
