Northern Regional College to Offer Successful Tour Guiding Course Again

Thursday

Following the success of the pilot programme, the Northern Regional College is planning to offer the OCN NI Level 2 Tour Guiding certificate again in the autumn. The course was run as a part-time evening course at the College’s Coleraine campus one evening a week between November and December last year. A total of nine people, some of them already involved in local tourism enterprises, successfully completed the course.

Wendy Gallagher, Tourism and Sport lecturer and course co-ordinator, said the course was offered in response to the growing demand for qualified tour guides.

“As the number of visitors to the Causeway Coast and Glens continues to grow, it is important that people are equipped with the necessary skills to work in our increasingly busy tourism sector.

Wendy continued: “Tourism already makes a significant contribution to the economy and with major golfing events like the Irish Open in July and the British Open in 2019 being hosted in this area, tourism is a major growth sector.”

The OCN NI Level 2 Tour Guiding Certificate is recognised by the Northern Ireland Tour Guiding Association (NITGA). Participates cover a range of subjects, including the role and responsibility of tour guides; health and safety; and tour commentary.
