Northern Regional College Offers New Health and Social Care Courses

Wednesday

To meet the growing demand for qualified healthcare workers, Northern Regional College is offering two new part-time Diplomas in Health and Social Care at the Newtownabbey campus. The one year Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care and the two year Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care have both been approved by the Northern Ireland Social Care Council and RQIA. Applicants should be in a care role, in either a full-time, part-time or voluntary capacity.

Course director, Jacqui McAllister explains why the healthcare sector needs qualified and committed staff:

“There are significant challenges in health and social care in Northern Ireland; growing demand, changing demographics, increasing acuity of needs and co-morbidity. In delivering this course we will make achieving quality the top priority by providing the right education, training and support for our learners that empowers them to deliver a framework of clear evidence based standards and best practice.  The skills and capacity of healthcare workers are integral to the delivery of high quality service.

“Healthcare staff provide care and support to people with a wide range of needs, arising out of disabilities, illness or old age and this care can transform lives, enabling people to maintain their independence longer.”

The healthcare sector makes a significant contribution to the UK economy, currently contributing an estimated £800 million in Northern Ireland alone. An ageing population, a rise in complex and long-term conditions and a reduction in public resources have all contributed to an increased demand for home care packages which is expected to grow further over the next three years.

Jacqui continues: “There are increased opportunities for people interested in a career in the health care sector. Having an accredited qualification will improve your employability.

“The Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care will provide both a practice-based qualification for specific level 4 job roles and will also act as a stepping stone towards more senior practice and management. It is particularly relevant for senior care/support staff, front line managers, assistant/deputy managers, team leaders, area domiciliary care managers and senior day care workers.

Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care is a professional qualification designed to build advanced knowledge and skills required by Managers, Deputy Managers, Senior care workers who aspire to be managers who work in the Residential /Domiciliary Health and Social Care sector. The qualification is appropriate for Managers who wish to gain a recognised leadership qualification and are already working in health and social care and have not yet achieved a vocational qualification at this level.
