Jane explained: “These ‘taster sessions’ were supported by Springboard, a charitable organisation which aims to introduce young people to the world of catering and teaching technical cookery skills.
“I was impressed with their level of skill and their workmanship,” said Jane, adding that she was particularly impressed with the young chefs’ dedication as they had come in to the College during their half term break from school.
“There is a severe shortage of chefs in Northern Ireland and at Northern Regional College we are doing what we can to help address this skills shortage. These young people demonstrated exceptional talent in the kitchen so I hope taster sessions like this will encourage anyone who is them to follow a career in the hospitality and catering sectors.
Participating schools included: North Coast Integrated College, Loreto College, Coleraine College, St Mary’s Limavady and Ballycastle High School.
Northern Regional College offers a number of Catering courses, including part-time leisure cookery classes and full-time professional cookery classes at its campuses in Ballymoney and Ballymena.
