Newtownabbey Prince’s Trust Students Win Social Innovation Student Challenge

Friday

A team of Northern Regional College's Newtownabbey Prince’s Trust students recently won the Social Innovation Student Challenge event in Belfast which was part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). The event in The Hive on 18 November 2015 was organised by Belfast City Council and was designed for teams of students to create innovative solutions to five social challenges.

The event was capped at fifty students and each student was placed into a team of five, with each team being given one specific challenge for which they had to develop a solution. The idea behind the event was for students from different colleges and universities to brainstorm together to share ideas, talents and skills in order to enhance the creative aspects required to successfully complete their team’s challenge. Each team was then asked to present their 10 minute pitch to a panel of five experts, known as Challenge Champions, demonstrating their proposed solutions, the concept that they developed and how they saw themselves resolving the challenge.

Two teams were then chosen to go through to the final “pitch off” where they presented a one minute pitch to the Challenge Champions Panel. The overall winning team comprised of: Peter Mogey and Robert Reid from Northern Regional College Newtownabbey along with two Business Studies students from Queens University Belfast and their idea was the development of an app for people with learning difficulties.
