Minister Farry said: "I am pleased to launch this new Welding Academy which will equip employees with specialist welding skills for both SDC and MDF. Both companies are currently experiencing growth and this will ensure they have the necessary skills support so they can continue to expand.
"Our local manufacturing and engineering sector plays an important role in the growth of the local economy. I set up the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Services Group to help identify skills needs within the sector, and welding was one area identified. This new Academy will help address these skills needs for both SDC and MDF and is an excellent example of collaborative working between my Department, local employers, Manufacturing NI and Northern Regional College."
The Academy will offer an intensive eight week training programme followed by a four week company placement. Successful participants will gain industry recognised qualifications and be interviewed by the companies on completion. Applications to the Welding Academy will close on Friday 11 September at 4pm and the training programme for successful applicants will start on 28 September. Training will be delivered by Northern Regional College at their Newtownabbey Campus.
