Workshops included learning to combine programming and lego; constructing renewable energy models and evaluate their efficiency and investigate the feasibility of the design scheme through using various land surveying equipment; build an air jet powered car using a balloon as an engine; learn the science behind some of the industry’s best selling moisturisers and bath bombs; and produce a sports drink and use maths skills to price your product competitively.
Aaron Ballantyne, Head of Department of Science and Service Industries at Northern Regional College explained, “Northern Regional College was delighted to welcome so many students to the STEM event at Coleraine campus. This is the third year that College-based STEM workshops have been part of the prestigious NI Science Festival, and we are delighted that this event has now become an annual event in the College calendar.
“Students had the opportunity to experience a range of practical activities and skills in Science and Technology subjects, which they found enjoyable and educational. The College STEM-based courses focus on the practical and industrial applications of the subjects and promote employment opportunities in areas such as Life Sciences, Computing, Built Environment, Technology, Engineering and Sports Science.”
