Oran said that having researched different options, he realised that the Foundation Degree in Building Technology and Management offered by the College at its Coleraine campus would meet the third level requirement as well as helping his role and delivery in building maintenance department within the Council’s Property Services.
Oran continued: “Having completed the course, I now have a much better knowledge of all the modern technologies within the ever changing building environment and a better understanding of how these can be integrated into our service program from health and safety to project management of outside contractors working within our properties.
“From a personal view, my improved knowledge has helped my confidence and will help me manage the building maintenance programs more efficiently, saving money on both our own in-house programs and third-party programs. Another bonus is that this course cost a lot less than an Open University degree and is very good value.”
Oran’s Foundation Degree qualification included skills such as Auto CAD which he has used for drawing plans for his department and his newly acquired building surveying skills have given Oran a better overall understanding of the building industry and science:
“This has really helped in my job and will help with my career progression. I have been promoted to Compliance/Property Officer two days a week and this was only achievable by the new knowledge and skills learnt while doing the Foundation Degree.
“I really enjoyed my time at College and felt the knowledge and experience of my lecturers were of the highest level,” explained Oran.
