International Academics to Deliver One-Day Seminar on Trauma and Its Impact on Families

Tuesday

Counselling one-day professional development courses at Northern Regional College to include two world-leading experts in military and domestic violence trauma. An international seminar on trauma and its impact on families aimed at professional counsellors is to be hosted by the Northern Regional College (NRC) on Friday March 14 in Jordanstown. The seminar, supported by the Northern Ireland Council for Children and Young People (NICCY) will feature two world-leading experts on trauma from Kansas State University.

Professor Briana Nelson Goff is a globally respected authority on military and disaster-related traumatic events and their impact on families, couples and children. She joins her colleague  Professor Sandra Stith who is an expert in intimate partner violence.

Also addressing the seminar are two of Northern Ireland’s top trauma experts, former police officer and now expert trauma counsellor Terry Shevlin and Dr Olive Buckley a GP who specialises in the care of victims of sexual violence.

NRC curriculum manager for counselling Roisin Horner says the harrowing subject of traumas and their impact on families illustrates the importance of the role which must be played by colleges of further and higher education.  “Vocational training particularly in the field of human trauma requires ever evolving skills and NRC is very proud to be able to call on some of the world’s leading experts to deliver one of the Counselling Professional Development courses,” says Ms Horner.

Commissioner for Children and Young People, Patricia Lewsley – Mooney says: “Where a family is affected by a distressing experience, it is important that each family member is appropriately supported so they can understand each other’s experience of the event and their reactions. “This is vital in helping families to avoid communication breakdowns and other problems.”
