Industry Experts and Former Students Participate in Design Workshop

Friday

Industry experts and past students of NRC took time out of their busy schedules this week to give back and share their experience with existing building and technology students at the Coleraine campus. As part of their semester one assessment, students on the Foundation Degree in Building Technology and Management are required to design a dwelling with a difference for a site close to the Coleraine campus.

The dwelling needs to be suitable for a wheelchair-bound client and it needs to be designed using a sustainable approach.   Course Director, Pat Condren said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the students to benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience that these industry professionals can impart.  The fact that they themselves are past students of the College not only highlights the success stories behind this vocational route but also a common understanding of the journey these students are on.”

Those participating in the Design Workshop included, Richard Millen who runs his own firm, Millen Architecture in Ballymoney and graduated from Coleraine Technical College in 1994 with a Diploma in Land Administration, going on to study Architecture at Dundee University.  Alan Ross left Coleraine Technical College in 1995 and went on to study Architecture at Queens. Alan is now a partner in ATP Architects in Coleraine.   Jonny Stewart is a town planner and currently works for GM Design Associates in Coleraine. Jonny completed a Diploma in Land Administration in 1998, going on to study Town Planning at Queens before returning to Coleraine to take up his post with GM Design in 2003.
Michael Williams graduated from Causeway Institute in 2002 going on to study Architecture at Queens University. Michael worked in a number of practices before setting up his own firm, Williams Creative Design, in 2012. Recently Michael has been working as an associate at WM Givens Architects in Coleraine.

Mr. Condren concluded, “We are very grateful that these busy professionals gave their time freely to help the students in what was a very successful event.  We are delighted that the time they spent with us at the College cemented their career paths and we hope to hold similar workshops in the future.”
