The students were given an insight into the company and were informed of the potential for employment in an improving construction industry locally. Eileen and Henry told the students that they would be willing to help with work placements, assignments and that a visit to FP McCann’s head office could be arranged in the near future.
FP McCann is one of the major construction firms in Northern Ireland with a turnover last year of £70million. The firm has recently been included in the Belfast Telegraph’s top 100 companies list and is seeking to grow the business over the next few years. For this to happen, jobs will be created across the board from apprenticeships to graduate positions and Eileen asked the students to keep the company in mind when thinking of applying for work placement. Lecturer Pat Condren commented,’ we are greatly encouraged by the fact that a company such as FP McCann would approach us to offer support like this for our students. The public must realise that the Construction Industry is a major economic driver and as such, should not be ignored as a place to follow a career path.’ He continued, ‘we are continually trying to show our students that there is life outside the classroom, and visits such as this are very important in reinforcing this message. More visits and talks have been planned over the coming few weeks with Architects and Planners from local firm, GM Design Associates, coming in the middle of May to speak to students.’
