Nail art, is a creative practice of painting decorative designs on fingernails and is a fun way to accessorize a special occasion outfit, and is increasingly becoming more popular in the fashion industry today.
Leanne Clydesdale and Kelly Brown, NRC Lecturers for Level 3 Advanced Nail Technology stated that “This event is a fun and creative way to capture the imagination of the students and to let them work on a live project, so that they fully understand, what is required by industry. Creating a competition which allows the Beauty Therapy students to work together and generate fantasy through an image based on ‘Disney’ characters allows them to explore with colour while still creating the complete look by combining hair, nails, make up and outfits .”
On the catwalk this year were students who modelled fantasy creations of ‘Walter Disney’, ‘Toy Story’, ‘Tinkerbell’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Cars’, ‘Frozen’, Minnie Mouse, Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, The Pirates of the Caribbean and Mr. Walter Disney.
Judging the competition were Laura Donnelly a past Beauty student of the College who now runs a successful nail salon business in Ballymena called ‘Sitting Pretty’, Catherine Hughes also a past Beauty student who likewise runs her own successful business ‘Catherine’s Beauty Boutique’ and Alison Jackson, NRC Curriculum Manager Beauty and Holistics.
The students were judged on the character they created and on the nail art they designed to complement their creation. Winner of the competition was Rebecca McAllister- Alice in Wonderland, 2nd place was awarded to student Rhonda Kelly – Pirates of the Caribbean and 3rd place awarded to Melissa Kilpatrick and her creation- The Nightmare before Christmas. Leanne and Kelly added that they were very proud of the achievements of all the students and that they have all demonstrated a very high level of skill and creativity throughout the competition.
Supporting the College and the students with their experience and sponsorship of prizes were, Glynis Taylor from Young Nails, Laura Donnelly from Sitting Pretty, Catherine Hughes from Beauty Boutique, Beauty Express, Euro Products, Florence Roby and Vita Liberata.
