Careers Advisor, Julie Hemphill explained: “Different qualifications offer alternative career pathways but if the qualification doesn’t suit someone’s needs or abilities, it isn’t their best option.
“Going back to school might be the easiest option but is it the right one? Sometimes, it’s good to move out of your comfort zone so please consider all options before deciding what to do.”
Andrew McDonald had planned to study Radiography at university but didn’t get the A levels grades he’d hoped for. Based on the subjects he’d studied at A level, he considered his options and was drawn towards the Foundation Degree in Electronic Engineering at Northern Regional College.
"It was a good decision and I really enjoy the practical side to the course. The Foundation degree promotes independent learning and is a good preparation for university - much better than going to university straight after A levels.”
Andrew plans to go to university to study engineering and hopes his work placement next year will help him decide what area to specialise in.
Northern Regional College offers a range of vocational courses from entry to postgraduate level covering diverse vocational areas including: Accountancy, Applied and Medical Science, Business Studies, Computing, Construction Engineering, Early Childhood Studies, Engineering and Health & Social Care.
