Causeway Pupils explore STEM opportunities at Northern Regional College

Friday

Local post primary school pupils gathered at the Northern Regional College’s Bring IT On event, funded by the Department for the Economy, to discover insights into new opportunities for pupils who aspire to follow a career in ICT and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

The event was hosted by BBC NI Weather’s Barra Best and featured talks from local employers such as Seagate Technology, Armstrong Medical Ltd, AVX Ltd, Allstate, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, McAuley Engineering Ltd and Generation Innovation – a network for teenagers and young people to encourage entrepreneurship run by Catalyst (formerly the Northern Ireland Science Park). Pupils also took part in workshops in TV production, electronic circuits and website design.

Stephen Price, Head of Department for Business and Computing at Northern Regional College, explained:
“Today’s event was designed to show pupils how broad ICT-related subjects are, by providing them with the opportunity to explore how they can aspire to be the next generation of professionals in STEM-related careers.

“We need to encourage students currently in our education system, as well as future generations, to understand and embrace the technology that affects them in everyday life.  We were also delighted to welcome so many employers to the College today to help us get this message across through a fun, informative, innovative and interactive event.”

At Northern Regional College we offer a range of courses for school leavers to help them to pursue STEM-related careers.  For further information visit www.nrc.ac.uk.
