Art & Design Students Celebrate Graphic Design Calendar Competition

Thursday

The BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design students from the Northern Regional College are celebrating the new Northern Regional College calendar for 2016, which was the outcome of an annual industry graphic design competition set and judged by McCadden, Belfast.

Each year students are invited to take part in this project and compete to design the winning entry in the corporate calendar, which is placed on the front cover of the calendar.  1,000 copies of the calendar are produced and many of these sent to organisations linked to Northern Regional College across the world, as an alternative to a Corporate Christmas Card, demonstrating the talents of Art and Design students at the College.

Jeanette Lammey, Course Leader for BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies explains, “At Northern Regional College, we continually strive to develop a curriculum which meets the needs of industry, while providing opportunities for our students to get involved in the world of Graphic Design. Working on ‘real’ projects, which fulfil ‘real economical needs’, is just one way we do this.”

The brief and competition was outlined and judged by McCadden, Belfast, where students were tasked to explore within their artwork, the theme ‘Ambition’.  Neil Ramsden, Creative Director from McCadden explains the brief “President Barack Obama famously said ‘We need to steer clear of poverty of ambition, where people want to drive fancy cars and wear nice clothes and live in nice apartments but don’t want to work hard to accomplish these things.  Everyone should try to realise their full potential’. We should all have a strong desire to do or achieve something, a will and determination to achieve success.  With these powerful feelings in mind, students were assigned the theme  ‘Ambition’.”

Jeanette added, “Students gain so much from this project in terms of learning, experience and knowledge regarding the design industry, that it can help them to make clear and concise choices on their future career plans as well as having the added bonus of seeing their design work produced professionally.”

Maria McGuigan, the competition winner of the graphic design competition was awarded a £150 amazon voucher alongside her winning design being featured as the January entry. Second prize was awarded to Rachael McCaughey and third prize to Katarina Sarkoziova.
