A new heritage trail showcasing some of NI’s Iconic landscapes is created by students

Thursday

The Trail, designed to lead the visitor off the beaten track and aimed at international and domestic visitors, is available online and via mobile phones . The Trail covers 60 miles (almost 100km) between the Giant`s Causeway World Heritage Site and the City of Derry, on the banks of the River Foyle. It showcases prehistoric landscapes, a medieval castle, Georgian follies, beautiful churches and a cathedral as well as fabulous views. Named after Frederick Hervey, the fourth Earl of Bristol and Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry, the trail can be followed either by car or bicycle, however hikers will find plenty of walks and no shortage of public transport for when legs get tired.

Praising the work of the Northern Regional College students Kathleen McBride, Regional Manager, Tourism NI said:  "This is a valuable contribution to our tourism product in the area and a terrific achievement for the students at Northern Regional College's interactive media foundation degree course. It is an outstanding example of the College applying the skills of students in a way which benefits the community and while also developing commercial applications for their work. Both students and lecturers should be very proud of their work".

Head of Department at Northern College, Stephen Price said: "Our students have produced a first class product which provides a unique opportunity for visitors as well as local businesses. The site offers information on local shops, cafes B&B's and services. The students involved in the project have learned a great deal about the research, technical skills as well as the commercial aspects of developing this application. Already the project has generated a series of web heritage/tourism commissions for the College which will enable our students to build on their foundation degrees and go further with their education and careers in this exciting industry.
