In 2021 it was announced by the report on Prevalence of Autism in School Aged Children (DHSSPS) that 1 in 22 children in Northern Ireland have a diagnosis of autism. But what about those who have long since received their diagnosis, or perhaps did not receive a diagnosis? The Northern Regional College are pleased to launch a new and bespoke qualification aimed to support those in these categories – a Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Adults with Autism. The course has been developed internally and has been endorsed by OCNNI.
This qualification has been designed to offer knowledge and understanding in a range of aspects of autism that can be applied in supporting adults with autism. Learners will gain insights into how autism can affect communication, behaviour, social interaction and periods of transition and will empower the learner to develop strategies and approaches to support adults with autism through various aspects of life and work.
Drawing on close connections with local Health & Social Care Trusts, Northern Regional College has created this course to allow the learner the opportunity to explore the principles of a person-centred approach, the influence of effective communication methods, recognise challenges in relation to physical and mental health and how to support these as well as an insight into the employment life-cycle all within the context of adults with autism.
This qualification would be suitable for anyone who is currently employed in a setting which involves working with adults with a diagnosis of autism. There is also an option for a tailored Health & Social Care module which may particularly appeal to those already working in this environment.
The course will run both Online and in-person on the Ballymoney campus during the 22/23 academic year.
