Course Content
This is an innovative new course that combines the City & Guilds Level 3 Specialist Support in Teaching & Learning with an additional and separate certificate in autism.
This course is suitable for anyone wishing to work as a classroom assistant in nursery, primary, secondary or special needs schools. The College will provide classroom-based learning designed to provide a thorough understanding of the role of a classroom assistant and the challenges of supporting children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
A work placement assessor will also provide support and feedback to match the development needs of the student. The course is designed to provide students with a well-rounded and thorough knowledge of relevant classroom issues. These include: safeguarding, personal development; inclusion, literacy, numeracy, autism etc.
Students will be required to attend a mandatory pre-course information session.
Special Features
Students will complete 21 mandatory units and a work placement (approximately 6-8 hours per week) in a suitable classroom setting.
Assessment Methods
The course will be assessed by assignments, case studies, practical exercises, presentations, and placement observations.
- Have a minimum of GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or equivalent
- Satisfactory Access NI checks
- 18 years of age and over
In circumstances where there are more applications for the course than there are places available, the College reserves the right to select candidates from those achieving the highest grades.

Essential Skills
All full-time students at the Northern Regional College have the opportunity to improve their English, Maths and IT skills and gain qualifications. The qualification you take will depend on the qualification you already have. If you do not have a grade C or above in GCSE English, Maths or ICT, you MUST do Essential Skills. This will form a compulsory part of your timetable.
