Course Content

This course is a university level qualification which has been designed to develop your knowledge and understanding in factors related to applied science. This Level 4 course will focus on biology and the importance of how cells and organs sustain life. The fundamentals of chemistry, mathematics and scientific data handling will also be covered throughout the course to ensure graduates have the required skills to progress on to the next stage of their scientific careers. The course is aimed at learners who want to further progress their careers within the science sector. The course is taught by qualified scientists with extensive industrial and education experience. Academic and practical skills will be developed through detailed informative lectures, laboratory practical’s, guest speakers and research development tasks. Throughout the course you will also have access to scientific laboratories with a range of modern scientific equipment where you gain invaluable hands-on experience.

The sciences are an important sector in Northern Ireland with many career progression opportunities available to HNC in Applied Sciences graduates. The aim of the college is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to apply to science related degree programmes at university or to progress to fulltime employment in the science industry.


Course Update

Please note that due to ongoing major campus construction projects courses at Ballymena, Coleraine and Ballymoney may be relocated to alternative suitable locations as required.


You must have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C (4) or above including English and Maths (or equivalent level 2 qualifications) plus one or more of the following:

  • A-level - A minimum of 48 UCAS points including at minimum, one A Level pass preferably in an appropriate subject (e.g. Biology or Chemistry)
  • Level 3 qualifications - Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science or PPP (48 UCAS Points)  
  • Other related Level 3 qualification (Please contact the course coordinator for details)

In circumstances where there are more applications for the course than there are places available, the college reserves the right to select candidates from those achieving the highest grades

Where mature students wish to have prior education and/or experience taken into account, in lieu of meeting the full course entry requirements, they should contact the relevant Course Director or Admissions by 12th August, as an application deadline will apply. It is at the College's discretion to consider APEL enquiries after the dates stated.


This course is recognised by Higher Education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant science/biology related university courses, for example:

  • Biomedical Science
  • Biological Science
  • Food and nutrition
  • Environmental Science

On completion of this qualification graduates can also progress directly into employment such as:
