Course Content

The purpose and aim of the IMI Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Automotive Studies is to offer individuals, who are experienced technicians/engineers in the automotive industry, with the opportunity to develop their knowledge of:

  • Management principles
  • Advanced vehicle technologies, including alternative fuel vehicles
  • Liaising with manufacturers and suppliers on technical matters
  • Providing colleagues with technical advice and support
  • Undertaking diagnostic consultations with customers.

This qualification contains 2 pathways; light vehicle & heavy vehicle.  Therefore learners can select the pathway appropriate to their sector experience.

Learners undertaking this qualification will enjoy liaising with people.  They will support a team, delegate work and provide technical guidance and coaching.  They will advise customers on technical issues and deal with complaints.  Learners may have recently progressed into management, or have been identified as having future management potential.


Course Update

Please note that due to ongoing major campus construction projects courses at Ballymena, Coleraine and Ballymoney may be relocated to alternative suitable locations as required.


The typical learner for this qualification will be 19 years plus, working in industry and will hold a Level 3 automotive technical qualification and/or an Advanced Apprenticeship.  They will have experience of diagnosing and rectifying faults on a wide range of vehicle systems, including electrical system operations.

Where mature students wish to have prior education and/or experience taken into account, in lieu of meeting the full course entry requirements, they should contact the relevant Course Director or Admissions by 12th August, as an application deadline will apply. It is at the College's discretion to consider APEL enquiries after the dates stated.

In circumstances where there are more applications for the course than there are places available, the College reserves the right to select candidates from those achieving the highest grades.


Upon successful completion students may progress to further learning and training or directly into employment as a Light/Heavy Vehicle Master Technician.
